Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson on Thursday posted lower-than-expected profit and sales during its key year-end quarter and said it expects only modest growth in the handset market this year.

Sony Ericsson, owned by Swedish company Ericsson (ERICb.ST) and Japanese group Sony Corp (6758.T), made a pretax profit of 35 million euros ($47 million) on sales of 1.53 billion.
Analysts in a Reuters poll had an average forecast for a pretax profit of 79.7 million euros and sales of 1.82 billion.
